True Worship: The Story of Janav, Who Prayed Without Compassion, and the Divine Lesson Given by the Goddess

The villagers were suffering from a severe water shortage, yet Janav showed no interest in helping them.

2. A Barren Land and A Barren Heart
One year, an extreme summer arrived. No rain fell, and the village pond dried up. The people went in search of water but found none. Even after seeing their suffering, Janav ignored them. “This is not my problem!” he said and continued his temple prayers without concern.

3. The Goddess’ Lesson
One day, a divine goddess appeared and stopped Janav’s prayers. “Praying to God alone is not enough. Without helping others, your worship is meaningless,” she declared. Janav was puzzled and asked, “I live only for God. Why should I help others?”

4. The Meaning of True Worship
The goddess showed him a barren land and said, “Just like this dry land, your heart has also dried up. Will the land flourish without rain? Similarly, worship becomes meaningful only when combined with kindness and charity.” Realizing his mistake, Janav began sharing his wealth and provided food and water to the needy. Soon after, rain finally fell, restoring the village’s prosperity. From that day forward, his temple worship also gained new meaning.

This story beautifully illustrates the true essence of Thirukkural. Living only for oneself is meaningless. Without a generous heart, even worship loses its value. Hence, true devotion must always be accompanied by compassion and selflessness!
