This Kural reveals one of life’s deepest truths: We should not refrain from doing righteous deeds just because they seem to offer no immediate benefit. Everything else in life — material possessions, fame, even relationships — may eventually fade or perish. But the good deeds, the dharma (virtue) one practices, remain with the person even until and beyond their final moments. This profound truth is reflected in the simple yet inspiring story.
Janav – A Student Who Valued Only Personal Gain
Janav was an academically brilliant student. He excelled in intelligence and talent far more than most of his peers. However, he had one major flaw — his actions were always based on a single question: “What’s in it for me?”
When a classmate asked to borrow a book, he would shrug it off: “Go get your own.” At home, when his father suggested volunteering in social service, Janav would say, “No one in our house even appreciates it, so why waste time?”
To Janav, virtue or charity seemed like a pointless and time-wasting task.
A New Perspective—Grandmother's Eye-Opening Words
Despite his top marks, Janav had no real friends. People didn’t feel comfortable approaching him. Even when he needed help, his classmates began to avoid him. One day, a teacher publicly pointed out one of Janav’s mistakes during a school meeting.
