ThamTham Vinaiyaan Varum
Meaning: The true wealth of a person is their children; and whatever wealth the children gain, it comes as the fruit of their own deeds.
Introduction
In a small village lived a hardworking man named Janav, a sincere and dedicated farmer. He had a little son named Aarav. Janav always believed, “My son must grow up to be a good and virtuous man — that is my true wealth.”
One day, Aarav curiously asked his father: “Appa, we don’t have much money at home, yet you always say that we have great wealth. What is that wealth you’re talking about?”
Janav smiled gently… He decided to answer that question not with words, but through his life itself.
The Wise Father
The next morning, Janav told Aarav, “My dear son, today we’ll go to our field and work together. There, you’ll see what my ‘true wealth’ really is.”
Both father and son went to the field and started working. After some time, Aarav grew tired and said, “Appa, I’m exhausted.” Janav smiled and replied, “My son, the fact that you are learning to work hard — that itself is my wealth!”
Hearing this, Aarav was surprised. Something awakened in his heart — he realized that hard work and good character are the real forms of wealth.
The Fruit of One’s Actions
A few days later, Janav was seen donating grains to poor families in the village. Aarav asked, “Appa, why do you give to the poor when we ourselves don’t have much?”
Janav smiled and said, “My son, our deeds determine our fortune. When we do good, good returns to us; when we do wrong, bad follows. That is the meaning of the Kural — ‘Avar porul tham tham vinaiyaan varum’ — everyone’s wealth comes as the result of their own actions.”
Aarav now understood — true wealth is not money, but the blessings and good outcomes born from righteous actions.
The True Wealth
One day at school, the teacher asked the students, “Children, what is the greatest wealth of your family?”
Aarav stood up confidently and replied, “My father says that I am his wealth! When I live as a good person and perform good deeds, that becomes his greatest pride.”
The whole class clapped in admiration. The teacher smiled warmly and said, “That lesson, my dear boy, will guide you throughout your life.”
The Moral of the Kural
In this story, Janav teaches his son a profound lesson:
“My dear son, your good deeds are your true wealth, and your good character is my pride.”
This beautifully reflects the message of Thiruvalluvar:
Thamporul enba tham makkal, avar porul tham tham vinaiyaan varum. Which means, Parents should consider their children as their true wealth; and the children’s fortune depends upon the virtue of their own actions.
Thus, virtue and moral conduct are the greatest treasures a child can inherit and the finest legacy a parent can create.
Conclusion
Through his life, Janav demonstrated that good children are the greatest wealth of parents. Money, property, and status may change or fade, but a child’s good character and virtuous deeds uplift not only the family but also society as a whole.
