The Thirukkural by Thiruvalluvar beautifully conveys the highest values of human life. While living in this world, living with honesty, goodness, compassion, and love is the true essence of a noble life. A person who lives with such virtues will, after death, earn a place among the divine beings — this is the profound meaning of this couplet. The following story illustrates this truth through a simple yet meaningful example — “The Virtuous Life of Janavi.”
The Virtuous Girl – Janavi
In a small village lived a little girl named Janavi. She was always cheerful and helpful to everyone. At school, she shared her books with her friends and spoke respectfully to elders. There was only one thought in her heart — “Only by doing good deeds does life become meaningful and beautiful.” Her honesty and good conduct made her a role model for everyone around her.
The Greedy Merchant and the Test
One day, a merchant named Karivelan came to the village. He announced that he had lost a gold coin and asked if anyone who found it would return it to him.
Janavi found the gold coin lying on the road. For a moment, she thought — “If I keep this, I could buy so many things! But this doesn’t belong to me.”
Without hesitation, she went straight to the merchant and returned the gold coin. The merchant was astonished. He said, “Little girl, how pure is your heart!” and offered her some silver coins as a reward.
But Janavi smiled and replied — “I only did my duty. Getting a chance to do good itself is my reward.”
Hearing these words, the merchant stood silent. He thought to himself, “Such a small girl, yet such a great heart!”
Respected by the Whole Village
Janavi’s honesty spread throughout the village. Seeing her, other children began learning the values of truth and virtue. Her schoolteacher praised her as “The Shining Light of Our Village.” She continued to help everyone and lived happily.
Janavi was known for her faith, compassion, and thoughtful nature. She often said — “Money is temporary, but virtue is everlasting.” Her life became an example for everyone in the village.
A Place Among the Gods in Heaven
Years passed, and Janavi grew old. After she passed away, the celestial beings gathered in heaven and spoke among themselves — “She lived with such truth and righteousness on earth — she deserves a place among us divine beings!”
With a bright smile, Janavi appeared as a radiant light in the heavens. That light continued to shine in the hearts of the villagers forever.
From that day onward, the people of the village would often say — “For those who uphold virtue, even the gates of heaven will open.” Janavi’s name became a symbol of goodness and moral excellence.
Conclusion:
Janavi’s life shows us the truth that Thiruvalluvar taught — If we live righteously and with virtue, even while living on earth, we become as exalted as those in heaven.
Her life taught this timeless lesson: “Protecting virtue is true success; humanity is the foundation of divinity.”
