Meaning: One who lovingly sends off the departing guest and eagerly awaits the arriving guest is considered a good host even by the heavenly beings.
Introduction
Hospitality is not just an action — it is one of the fundamental qualities of a human heart. Thiruvalluvar says that the person who sends off a leaving guest with love and welcomes a coming guest with joy is the true host.
Janav lovingly sends off the departing guest
It was a hot afternoon. A grandfather who had eaten in Janav’s house and rested for a while was ready to leave.
As the old man started walking, Janav quickly rushed to the doorway and said, “Grandpa… walk slowly and carefully. Was the food enough for you?” he asked with genuine concern.
Then he placed a small pot of water in the old man’s hands. “It’s very sunny… please take this with you, Grandpa. Walk safely,” he said with heartfelt kindness.
The old man’s eyes filled with grateful tears. “Son… it is my fortune to meet a child who shows such affection,” he blessed him.
Janav’s kindness made the old man’s heart light and peaceful.
Janav eagerly waits for the arriving guest
A few minutes after the old man left, Janav noticed someone walking from a distance.
He immediately ran to his mother. “Amma! Someone is coming… it looks like we have a guest!” he said with excitement.
Their house was not big. They did not always have plenty of food. But none of these limitations ever made Janav’s heart small.
His mother smiled and said, “Son… where there is love, guests will come on their own.”
Hearing this, Janav cleaned the entrance, brought a tumbler of water, and prepared to welcome the guest with joy.
The same love shown to both guests
The person walking through the village path was a tired traveller. He had been walking for long and was exhausted.
Janav opened both his hands wide and welcomed him with a bright smile. “Please come, sir… first take some rest. Drink some water. You will feel better,” he said gently.
Then he added, “Our home has only what we have… but love has no limits. We are truly happy that you have come.”
The traveller ate, rested, and felt deeply moved by Janav’s affection. Peace and gratitude spread across his face.
A noble quality — respected even by the gods
When the villagers heard about this incident, they came with admiration and affection.
“Janav… you treated both the leaving guest and the arriving guest with the same love. This is a great virtue, son,” they praised.
An elderly woman added, “Children who show such kindness are worthy of being hosts even to the gods in heaven!”
Janav looked at his mother with a warm smile. That smile itself was the greatest reward for him. His heart felt full.
Moral of the Story
Whether a guest is leaving or arriving, showing them the same love, respect, and compassion is the essence of true hospitality. As Thiruvalluvar teaches — such love not only elevates a person but makes his virtues so great that even the divine beings consider him a worthy host.
