Once upon a time in a bustling town, four cotton merchants decided to join forces in their trade, believing that collaboration would bring them greater success. Little did they know that their innovative idea to protect their goods would lead them into an unexpected predicament.
1. The Cotton Partnership and a Cat’s Duty
A cotton merchant named Panju Vanitha and three other traders formed a partnership in the cotton trade. To protect their cotton bundles from being ruined by rats, they decided to raise a cat. Each partner took responsibility for one of the cat’s legs, decorating it with anklets, bells, and other adornments as a symbol of their care and ownership.
2. The Cat’s Accident and the Fire
One unfortunate day, the cat injured one of its legs. The partner responsible for that leg wrapped it with an oil-soaked bandage to help it heal. However, as the cat wandered near the stove, the oil-soaked bandage caught fire. Startled, the poor cat ran wildly through the room, and in its panic, dashed across the cotton bundles. As a result, the bundles caught fire, burning the valuable cotton.
3. Seeking Justice from Mariyadhai Raman
The three other partners, who had suffered heavy losses due to the fire, blamed the partner responsible for the injured leg. They believed he was at fault and demanded compensation. Together, they approached Mariyadhai Raman, a wise and respected judge, to resolve the dispute. The defendant argued that the fire was an accident and not caused by any ill intent.
4. The Judge’s Wise Ruling
After carefully hearing both sides, Judge Mariyadhai Raman came to a fair conclusion. He explained that the partner who wrapped the leg acted out of care, and it was not his intention to cause harm. Since the cat couldn’t walk properly due to its injured leg, the other three legs—managed by the other partners—led the cat into the mishap. Therefore, the judge ruled that the three other partners were responsible for the losses and should compensate the fourth partner.
Grateful for the wise and fair judgment, the defendant rejoiced. He realized that the old saying, *"The helpless are often aided by divine grace,"* had come true in his favor. Justice had been served, and peace was restored among the partners.
The story highlights the importance of fairness and shared responsibility in partnerships. When a mishap occurs, such as the cat accidentally causing the cotton to catch fire, it's easy to blame one party. However, the wise judge, Mariyadhai Raman, shows that blame must be placed thoughtfully. In this case, the accident was not caused by any ill intent, and the burden of responsibility was shared by all partners. The conclusion teaches us that justice, when delivered wisely, can bring peace, even in complex situations, and reminds us that divine grace often aids the innocent.
