Introduction:
Thirukkural is considered one of the greatest ethical and moral texts in the world. It beautifully speaks about virtue (dharma), leadership, and principles for living a good life. In this article, we look at this Kural, which teaches us how our actions should be—not just whether we are able to do something, but whether it is morally right to do it. Thiruvalluvar says: We must choose to do only those actions that we are capable of. However, more importantly, those actions must be done with honesty, good intention, and moral values. Just because we are able to do something doesn’t mean we should do it. We must ask, is it righteous?
1. A Smart Boy Named Janav—Eager to Earn Money
Janav was a clever and hardworking high school student living in a small town. Apart from attending school during the day, he worked in a stationery shop in the evenings to support his family and meet his own needs. From a young age, Janav had a strong desire:
"How can I earn money faster?" His intention was not wrong, but the way he thought of achieving it slowly started going in the wrong direction.
2. A Wrong Decision—Choosing a Dishonest Path
One day, Janav’s friend Gopi gave him an idea:
"Janav, there are some old items in the shop that nobody notices. What if we quietly take them and sell them elsewhere? We can make a good profit!" At first, Janav felt it was wrong. But then he thought, "I can do this... No one will know... Why not try it?" This is exactly what the Kural refers to as “Ollum vagaiyan”—an action that is possible to do. But what Janav forgot was “Aravinai Ovade”—never avoid righteousness in any action.
3. Realization—A Lesson from His Mother
One evening, Janav sat at home feeling upset. His conscience was disturbed. His mother noticed and asked him what was wrong. Janav shared the truth honestly. His mother gently said, "Janav, just because you can do something, should you do it?" No! You must always think, is it good? Is it right? Is it fair?" "Thiruvalluvar says, 'Even if you have the ability, don’t act if it’s not righteous." These words went deep into Janav’s heart. He realized his mistake.
4. A Truthful Change—Success Through Righteous Path
The next day, Janav met the shop owner and told him everything. The shopkeeper was surprised at first, but then smiled and said: "Your honesty is your true strength. That’s what I value the most!" Later, Janav started a small business selling school supplies honestly and responsibly. His hard work, trustworthiness, and dedication brought him success.
Janav made a promise to himself: "It’s not enough that I can do something—I will only do what is right, fair, and just."
Conclusion:
Thirukkural is a simple verse, but it carries a deep message. Just like Janav’s story, in our own lives—in work, business, studies, and friendships—we may be able to do many things. But actions that don’t follow the path of righteousness will not lead us to true success, only to regret or guilt.
