Tirukkural (32):
Araththinuoonku aakkamum illai athanai
Maraththalin oongillai kedu
Meaning: There is no gain greater than virtue, and there is no loss worse than forgetting virtue.

Janav—A Student Who Follows the Path of Honesty
Janav was a regular school student living in a small town. But he had one special quality—honesty. Every day while going to school, he would help his elderly neighbor by buying her medicine. He also helped his friends with studies. Doing good and right things was natural for him.
A Sudden Test—Finding Money on the Road
One day, while going to school, Janav saw two bags lying near the road. Inside, there was ₹10,000. No one was around.
One thought inside him said: “Take the money. You can improve your house and buy things you like.”
But his inner voice—his conscience—said, “This money is not yours. It may be someone else’s hard-earned savings. Return it.”
Without hesitation, Janav walked straight to the police station and handed over the money.
Doing the Right Thing Always Brings Good
The next day, an old farmer came to the police station. He proved the money was his and thanked Janav with tears in his eyes: “This money was saved for my daughter’s medical treatment. I lost it by mistake. You saved our lives.”
Janav felt peaceful and happy. He didn’t expect any reward—doing the right thing was enough for him.
School Reward and Recognition
This good act became known in Janav’s school. At a school function, he was awarded the “Best Behaviour Student” prize. The principal gave a speech: “Education is not just about books. Good character matters. Janav is a true example of values.”
What If He Had Done the Wrong Thing?
But what if Janav had taken the money and hidden it?
The police might have caught him.
He could be blamed as a thief.
He might be suspended from school.
His parents would feel ashamed.
His life would be filled with guilt and fear.
All this just because of forgetting virtue.
